Just before vomiting, your mouth produces extra saliva — but why? It's not just random. This saliva surge is actually your body’s way of protecting your teeth.
When you vomit, stomach contents (which include powerful hydrochloric acid) travel back up the esophagus. That acid is highly corrosive and can damage tooth enamel. The additional saliva helps dilute and neutralize the stomach acid, forming a protective barrier and washing it away before it can cause serious harm to your teeth.
A small but fascinating example of how smart and protective our bodies really are!
