Manipuri traditional ethnic dress belongs to the people and communities associated with Manipuri heritage, including both Bishnupriya Manipuri and Meitei Manipuri communities. It originated and developed in Manipur. It should also be noted that the term “Meitei” has been associated with “Manipuri.” According to the 1968 Manipur Assembly Resolution, Meitei is recognized as Manipuri/ Meitei Means Manipuri. If you ask why, the reason is that the term “Manipuri” is used as a suffix or prefix by both communities, such as Bishnupriya Manipuri and Meitei Manipuri. Therefore, it is not correct for any one group alone to claim exclusive ownership of the traditional Manipuri dress. At the same time, it is true that the Meitei Manipuri community has made significant contributions to the development and modification of various designs over time. It is also true that many aspects of dress and clothing traditions are not identical between Bishnupriya Manipuris and Meitei Manipuris. However, many Bishnupriya Manipuri clothing practices have also been influenced by traditions that originated in Manipur.

We respectfully urge everyone to refrain from engaging in unnecessary controversies and instead promote mutual understanding and respect. Let us avoid making statements that may harm the social environment or create misunderstandings between communities.
