This pattern, resembling the spokes of a wheel, results from the inclusion of darker, carbon-rich material during the emerald's growth process. The name "trapiche" comes from the Spanish word for a grinding wheel used in sugar mills, reflecting the gemstone's distinctive appearance.

The pattern arises from the growth of the emerald crystal, with the darker impurity (often lutite) being pushed towards the center and radiating outwards in the six directions of the crystal's corners.
