In Embedded Android :

Application:
generally vendor specific location will be placed if not we have to push the application to the system. main things are manifest.xml file in that path.

Application Framework:
There is /framework/base/core here /java /jni etc folders -- from here JNI methods and service registration, device service , device manager etc will implemented for a new service adding to a framework.

HAL : hardware/libhadware/modules
this HAL interface(write , read etc) to linux kernel and driver through sysfs and /dev -- which will mention in HAL layer. Which node(/sys/devices/i2c/ # # ) or UART(/dev/ttyso) etc

I guess Linux Kernel Driver is common standard procedure of placing.
