Back in the early 80s, when going abroad was still a novelty, I was excited about being nominated for a Unilever, London.

I met several Unilever colleagues from across the world.

While we were having lunch, an American shot rapid-fire questions at me, on India.
Some, a bit too sharp.

His last question was offensive.
“I just don’t understand ..how the heck do you Indians eat with your hands?”

For a moment, I felt a twinge of irritation. Eating with hands was second nature to us—I had never considered it odd. We wash our hands with soap, and then eat. What could be strange about that?

After thinking for a moment, I smiled and replied:
“Well, it’s the only instrument I can guarantee has not been in someone else’s mouth, the previous night.”

He froze, then broke into laughter, eyes wide with realization.
“That is so, so interesting!” he admitted.

What could have turned into an offensive exchange instead became a shared moment of humour and a reminder that sometimes, the best answers are those that mix wit with wisdom.
