Vertical housing has always been a question of social inclusivity. The modular approach in a housing complex ensures equity in spatial planning; however, social zoning becomes discontented as the ground levels are inaccessible to residents at higher levels. As a consequence, the modularity allows us to twirl the building’s footprint around, giving rise to horizontal terraces that match the size of the unit, this also allows porosity within the building, giving shaded decks for the residents. The result is more spatial formations within the programme and a layout that generates the idea of ‘ground’ at higher elevations.

As the mammoth mass sits on the land and further when we sculpt the land layer by layer pushing each column of programme in a bridged composition, while keeping the alternating floors connected as response to the surroundings. The footprint demands for splitting horizontally, the building’s density is dissipated by dissecting it to accommodate the harsh winds from the southern cone. As the visual length cuts through the building, we allow eastem light to pe*****te from the opposite direction, ensuring that light resches the deeper shells of the built for. This allows the building to settle as a single boat.

Work in Progress - Banyan Terrace , Hosuing Development
A topography that adapts to the built or a built form that adapts to a varied topography.
The land falls nearly 60 metres from one end to the other. Natural, whale sized laterite chunks have, for ages, held together a densely forested terrain. Water finds its own course across the land, travelling toward the tail of the site where it finally merges with a stream.
Within this landscape, the programme demands a mammoth density heavy in both weight and movement. The built form therefore manipulates itself to flow with the terrain, allowing land and built to exist not as separate entities, but as parts of one another.
