Families in Gaza Express Mixed Emotions Over Ceasefire in Lebanon
Families in Gaza, reeling from months of relentless Israeli assaults, have responded with a mix of relief, hope, and frustration as they watch news of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Residents of Deir el-Balah, a central city in Gaza, voiced their exhaustion after nearly 14 months of conflict. While some expressed happiness for Lebanon’s truce, others feel abandoned, questioning why their own suffering has not prompted a similar resolution.
“We are happy for Lebanon, of course,” said Maysaa Khalil, who was displaced from Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighborhood to Khan Younis a year ago. “But we feel that we have been forgotten. Why not stop both wars together, since Israel is the one who started them?”
As people in Gaza continue to endure heavy losses, many remain hopeful for their own ceasefire. Hamedi, a displaced resident from Beit Hanoon, expressed cautious optimism. “I think the beginning stages of a ceasefire might start in the next three or four days,” he said from a United Nations-run shelter in Deir el-Balah.
His friend, Fadi, echoed this hope, suggesting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ceasefire with Hezbollah could pave the way for talks concerning Gaza. “Netanyahu has his victory. The next step will be Gaza,” Fadi said, though he remained uncertain about immediate progress. “Perhaps in weeks, not days,” he added.
