Tom Jones as a Realistic Novel
William Hazlitt did not exaggerate when he observed that Fielding’s novels throw more light on the eighteenth century society of England than the whole mass of statistical and historical documents. The observation is quite justified in view of the fact that Tom Jones presents a full and faithful picture of the countryside, the highways, and the urban society of London. In this respect, Tom Jones makes definite advance over the literary works of Fielding's predecessors whose portrayal of the social life of the country is sketchy and incomplete.
