Over 4,000 families in Haldwani, a city in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand, have received notices from the North-Eastern Railways to vacate their homes within a week due to illegal encroachments on railway land. If they do not comply, the notice warns, their homes will be demolished at their expense. This notice comes as a harsh blow to these families, who must now find alternative housing in the New Year.
Residents of the Haldwani area in Uttarakhand, led by Congress MLA Sumit Hridayesh, have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the order of the Uttarakhand High Court. The Supreme Court will consider the petition, which challenges the high court's order, on January 5.
