Motherhood, Miracles & Medicine: Chetna's Story of Hope.
Motherhood moves mountains. In Chetna’s case, a heart patient and a new mom, it was her faith in God, doctors, and medicine. “I knew that mine was a high-risk case, but it just didn’t feel like one. My pregnancy went by in a breeze,” beams the 32-year-old as she cradles her healthy baby boy.
Having undergone a mitral valve replacement and tricuspid repair in 2014, her journey to motherhood wasn't a walk in the park. She was also diagnosed with PCOD. So, getting pregnant naturally was like a miracle in itself. But with a heart condition, the stakes were even higher. From blood thinners that can jeopardise pregnancy to the threat of thrombolysis or restricted foetal growth, the list of complications for Chetna and her baby was long.
“There were moments of fear, but I researched everything. Instead of dwelling on the risks, I asked, ‘What can be done?’. I focused on what I could control, and so I chose the best doctors I could and gave them my 110% with lifestyle and medicine compliance.”
Chetna's positivity is infectious and is also exuded by her treating team, led by Dr. Preeti Rastogi (Director and HOD – Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Medanta, Gurugram).
“Chetna’s tissue valve minimised some risks during pregnancy. But close monitoring was crucial. Early involvement, sharp check-ups and frequent follow-ups meant we could address issues promptly. This allowed Chetna to focus on enjoying her pregnancy, while we managed the medical aspects,” Dr. Rastogi explained, adding that though Chetna came under their care early on, it is best for heart patients to plan pregnancies under the care of a multi-disciplinary team.
Regular checkups, fluid intake control, and a customized exercise plan became Chetna's routine. Challenges arose, like obstetric cholestasis and a breech baby, but the team tackled them together.
Chetna's story is a testament to the power of planning, compliance, and a skilled medical team. It's a message of hope for young women with heart conditions – motherhood is a possibility, not a dream deferred.
