Tuberculosis second medical opinion

Every human body is different and as such every illness and reaction to that illness is different. That is why the diagnosis of a disease depends highly on the doctor looking after the patient. What experience the doctor has, what techniques he uses and how he interprets all of them together to come to the conclusion. Diagnosis is a complicated process. Many diseases share symptoms, which can make it very difficult for a physician to arrive at a definitive diagnosis.

Reasons for getting a second medical opinion can be varied like ensuring yourself against misdiagnosis, choosing the right treatment or getting a definite diagnosis.

A patient once was suffering from severe pain in his right shoulders. Which soon extended up to below his right rib. He went to many doctors to find reprieve but did not find any, while his pain started to become unbearable. He went to many doctors who kept misdiagnosing him. Some said its a neurological disorder and others said its chronic arthritis etc but nothing worked.

Finally, after almost 2 months, one doctor decided to do a full 3D MRI and the illness was quite clear. It was TB of the musculoskeletal system. It had already spread in multiple areas including the spine. As the patient never showed any symptoms of TB in the lungs, most doctors never looked at the possibility of TB being in the musculoskeletal system.

It took almost 9 months for the patient to heal fully and in that time he had to show to multiple doctors, from orthopaedics to internal medicine specialists. It is clear from this example that if the patient would have got the correct second medical opinion, his healing time would have been considerably shorter and could have avoided unnecessary pain and agony.

While bone tuberculosis can lead to some painful side effects, the damage is usually reversible when treated early with the right regimen of medications. In many cases, spinal surgery is necessary, such as a laminectomy.
