Soaring prices of nitrogen‑based fertilizers are raising alarms that global food inflation could re‑escalate over the next 12–15 months, as farmers face a brutal choice between cutting use and absorbing higher costs.

Analysts warn that the “input cost shock” in nitrogen, phosphate and potash is already pressuring grain producers operating on razor‑thin margins, with any scale‑back in fertilizer application likely to depress crop yields.
Nitrogen fertilizers are highly energy‑intensive, relying heavily on natural gas, and recent volatility in global energy markets has driven up production costs and disrupted supply chains. Trade restrictions, sanctions, and domestic‑supply priorities in major producer countries have further tightened availability, pushing benchmark prices toward or above levels last seen during the 2008–09 commodity boom. For many wheat, maize and rice farmers, higher fertilizer bills mean either reduced application – which risks lower yields – or higher production costs that are ultimately passed on to consumers.

UN and World Bank‑linked analyses caution that sustained high input prices could add renewed upward pressure to already high food‑price indices, especially in low‑ and middle‑income countries where households spend a large share of income on food. They urge governments to pair targeted subsidies for smallholders with long‑term investments in precision fertilization, soil‑health practices and diversified crop rotations to reduce dependence on synthetic nitrogen without sacrificing yields.
