Designed for a family of five, the house has four bedrooms and two baths. It’s intentionally compact, easy to maintain, and rooted in sustainability. The brief was clear: to create an earth house using site-sourced materials, for a client deeply committed to eco-friendly building.

The house sits on a spacious terrace in a peri-urban part of Gangtok, facing south to capture sunlight, valley views, and natural ventilation. We worked carefully to preserve the trees along the site boundary and shaped the building to be slender, so every room breathes with light and air.

The layout is simple and functional. The lower floor holds the living, dining, kitchen, one bedroom, and a bath. Upstairs, three bedrooms, a lounge, and a separate bath and toilet. All bedrooms open toward the southern sun and valley vistas. From the east, the entrance path leads past a rainwater-harvesting pond to a welcoming porch.

Berbing House

The program is laid out in three different levels where in the bedrooms occupy the top and lower level offering privacy as well the view, and in the mid level, the living, dining kitchen open out to the natural contours that converge with the building. All the spaces are connected with a wedged staircase that double up as a space to sit, chit chat and view the city. The space above the staircase is used as a sunroom which also doubles up as an additional living area for the house.
