Pulitzer Prize-Winning Photos And Their Stories
The Pulitzer Prize for Photography was established in 1942, and has been awarded to some of the most poignant and recognizable photos in recent history. Since 1967 it has been split into two categories: the prize for feature photography, and the prize for breaking news photography. This is one of the remarkable photos, and the story behind it:
2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography
Awarded to Mary Chind of The Des Moines Register for her photograph of the heart-stopping moment when a rescuer dangling in a makeshift harness tries to save a woman trapped in the foaming water beneath a dam.
River rescue in downtown Des Moines:
A woman is pulled from near the Center Street dam by construction worker Jason Oglesbee on Tuesday. A man who was with the unidentified woman died in the Des Moines River. A rescue team from the Des Moines Fire Department tried several times to rescue the woman but could not get close enough to her.

Syria coverage wins Pulitzer Prize in Breaking News Photography 2013
A handout picture provided by the Pulitzer Prize organization on 16 April 2013 shows a Syrian man crying while holding the body of his son near Dar El Shifa hospital in Aleppo, Syria, 03 October 2012. The boy was killed by the Syrian army. AP photographers won a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking New Photography with images from Syria on 15 April 2013 it was announced in New York, USA. It was awarded to "Awarded to Rodrigo Abd, Manu Brabo, Narciso Contreras, Khalil Hamra and Muhammed Muheisen of the Associated Press for their compelling coverage of the civil war in Syria, producing memorable images under extreme hazard."
