The Beary language (spoken in the Beary region of Karnataka/Kerala) saw its first-ever feature film, , released in 2011. The film explores the struggles of a young woman, Nadira, within the traditional, patriarchal Byari Muslim community, focusing on restrictive marriage/divorce laws (like Iddat and Talaq) and her fight for freedom.
In a rare feat, the very first film of a language industry won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film that same year, instantly putting the language on the cinematic map.
