Stress and anxiety often stem from triggers—environmental cues that evoke past experiences or failures. These triggers can affect various aspects of our lives, like relationships, work, or specific situations involving certain people.
For example, a difficult client interaction that caused emotional pain in the past may resurface when dealing with a new client who exhibits similar behaviors. Similarly, a previous betrayal in a relationship can make it challenging to trust and build new connections when encountering similar behaviors.
Validation is key. When stress or anxiety arises due to a person, thing, or situation, pause and ask yourself why you're feeling this way and where it's coming from. Recognize that triggers themselves are neutral; it's our emotions and past experiences that give them significance. By validating our triggers, we can better manage stress and prevent our past from controlling our present.
