A medical coder does not have anything to do with the technological aspects of medical record keeping. Even though the word “code” is in the title, medical coders do not write code for computer programming. They also do not maintain medical records or have anything to do with ensuring the protection and safety of patient information stored electronically.

Medical coders need to be fluent in coding systems like the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the associated Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).

Medical codes are important in research because they allow researchers to easily track certain diseases and conditions. This tracking is useful to organizations when they are seeking critical funding for projects. By showing the numbers and real-world ramifications of certain conditions, researchers can present stronger cases to the funding organizations.
