Plastic was created by Alexander Paree in 1862 .He made synthetic polymer from petroleum and other fossil fuel .This polymer came to be known as plastic.
Initially this polymer was created to save elephants.Because in late 1800’s elephants were sacrificed for their Ivory to make billiard balls(Billiards was then a very popular game with elites of Europe and England)
Soon this man made polymer provided an inexpensive alternative to many things .It was relatively easy and inexpensive to make this polymer and this substance was very durable so it replaced wood, steel, glass and paper.
Today plastic has a part of our lives that we donot even give it a thought. But it’s irony that the very substance created to save the environment is responsible for damaging our world today.
All this is happening because of excessive and irrational use of plastic.
Plastic has become a global problem today because it’s very difficult to destroy this polymer.A thin plastic bag takes as much as 400 years to disintegrate.
It is noted that only 14% of plastic that we use makes it’s way to recycling units. And of this 14% only 9% is properly recycled.About 60% of our plastic waste funds it’s way in garbage dumps and rest of it finds its way in oceans.
Every year 100000 marine animals die either due to ingesting plastics or they get entangled in plastics thrown in ocean.
There are many other ways where plastic is harming our lives eg tiny plastic fibers are released in air due to friction of tyres on road. These fibers remain suspended in air and find way into our lungs.
Let’s all do our bit for our Mother Earth
-Stop using plastic bags, use cloth bags instead
-donot use plastic straws, spoons, fork and knives etc
-use glass or steel containers instead of plastic containers
-carry your tiffins to restaurants and hotels to carry back left over food
-restrict use of vehicles .
