Discover the Dolmen of Soto, a remarkable Neolithic marvel nestled in southern Spain, dating back an astonishing 4,500 to 5,000 years. Often compared to Stonehenge for its majestic presence and mysteries, this site is affectionately dubbed the Underground Stonehenge due to its subterranean design.
With a stunning 21-meter-long passageway leading to a circular chamber, the dolmen showcases the incredible skill and architectural innovation of its ancient builders. Topped with 20 massive stone slabs meticulously placed to cover the passage and chamber, this feat of engineering required immense labor and a sophisticated understanding of construction for its time.
While the interior remains hidden from view, it likely served as a sacred space for rituals or ceremonies. Bellevue Colliery | 1905
The Delaware, Lackawanna, and Western’s Bellevue Colliery near Scranton, Pennsylvania began operations in the 1850s.
I’ve previously written a few stories about some of the men who worked this mine - men who left behind fascinating firsthand accounts of life underground during the Civil War era.
While digging into their stories, I turned up some remarkable photographs of the colliery complex.
This one was taken in July 1905 and is preserved by the National Park Service...
