Rudolph and Adolf Dassler grew up in Herzogenaurach, Germany. Their father worked at a shoe factory, and when the brothers returned from fighting in the First World War they started a shoe factory of their own. They created the Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory in 1924, and began producing hand sewn athletic shoes. Their shoes were a complete success, and were sported by olympic athletes including Jesse Owens, who wore them to four gold medal victories in the 1936 olympics. The brothers could not agree on the direction their business should take, however, and parted ways. Adolf Dassler created Adidas, and Rudolph started Puma. The fate of the companies though, was decided by Rudolph, whose disagreement with the coach of the German National Team led the entire German team to wear Adidas to their 1954 World Cup victory, making Adidas the premier supplier of athletic footwear for years to come.
