12 July: World Paper Bag Day

This is one of many things, we take for granted.

It is time to recognize the significance of an invention - Paper Bag.

Millions of people use paper bags every day.

Readily recyclable, paper bags have been around for many years.

Margaret E. Knight became ‘The mother of the grocery bag’ after she designed the square, flat bottomed bag, and the machine that would fold and paste them in1870.

Over the years, other inventors have received recognition and patents for their inventions of devices that improve the paper bag or its production.

Arts and Crafts – Paper bags make great puppets, masks, and windsocks. Get decorating with your kids and have fun while doing it, too!

Gift bags – Recycle and make gift bags. Whether you give home baked goodies or another thoughtful gift, your gift bag may steal the show.

Ripen fruit – Don’t wait for green fruit to ripen. Put it in a paper bag and fold the top. This traps the ethylene gas given off by the fruit, which helps it to mature.

Paper bags offer several environmental benefits when compared to plastic bags. They decompose faster and reduce long-term pollution. Though paper production also uses resources, proper recycling and responsible usage can minimize environmental impact.

Happy World Paper Bag Day !

10 July: National Fish Farmer’s Day

Every year on July 10th, India celebrates National Fish Farmer’s Day to honour the invaluable contributions of fish farmers, aquaculture professionals, and stakeholders in the fisheries sector.

This day serves as a platform to recognize their efforts in ensuring a sustainable and thriving fishing industry, which plays a crucial role in India’s economy and food security.

The date holds historical importance, commemorating the groundbreaking work of Professor Dr. Hiralal Chaudhury and his colleague Dr. K. H. Alikunhi.

On this day in 1957, they successfully demonstrated the induced breeding of Indian Major Carps using the hypophysation technique, sparking a revolution in inland aquaculture.

Fish farmers play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demand for fish protein, generating employment opportunities, and contributing to the country’s food security. Their dedication to adopting modern aquaculture techniques, improving fish productivity, and conserving aquatic resources is commendable.

Happy National Fish Farmer’s Day !
