There used to be king by the name Dhanwantari in Kashi (Varanasi now). He had travelled even outside his kingdom to preach about Ayurveda. It was because of him that Ayurveda became so famous in India. So whenever there is any mention of Ayurveda and it's formulations, King Dhanwantari is always remembered. He was born on the thirteenth day of a fortnight as per lunar calender. That is why followers of Ayurveda medicines started observing his birthday as Dhanwantari Teras or Dhanteras in short.

Dhanwantari was actually born in the cusp of thirteenth and fourteenth day of the fortnight.
