Professor J. Gregory Dees, the Faculty Director of the Center for the Advancement of Social Entrepreneurship at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business describes social entrepreneurs as one special breed of leader.

In his paper 'The Meaning of "Social Entrepreneurship" ', he writes: ' Where others see problems, social entrepreneurs see opportunity. They are not simply driven by the perception of a social need or by their compassion, rather they have a vision of how to achieve improvement and they are determined to make their vision work. They are persistent. The models they develop and the approaches they take can, and often do, change, as the entrepreneurs learn about what works and what does not work. '

At the time the paper was written, he was the Miriam and Peter Haas Centennial Professor in Public Service at Stanford's Graduate School of Business and an Entrepreneur-In-Residence with the Kauffman Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership.
