World Environment Day 2026 Celebration

As part of the World Environment Day 2026 observance, ATREE CERC organized a meaningful environmental awareness programme at AB Vilasam HSS, Aryakkara, Muhamma, Alappuzha.

The event featured a Nature Collage Competition, providing students with an opportunity to creatively express their thoughts on nature conservation and environmental sustainability. A screening of the documentary "A Bridge Over the Troubled Waters" offered valuable insights into the ecological importance of Vembanad Lake and the environmental challenges faced by its dependent communities.

A special highlight of the programme was the interaction session with representatives of clam collectors from Vembanad, who shared their experiences and traditional knowledge about the lake ecosystem. Their interaction helped students gain a deeper understanding of the connection between livelihoods, biodiversity, and environmental conservation.

The programme inspired students to become active participants in protecting nature and promoting sustainable living.

A productive and inspiring session was successfully conducted with the VFC team. The Team Captain presented the report, while Ms. Maneeja Murali, Senior Programme Officer, compiled and presented the consolidated reports. Valuable discussions on the way forward were led by Dr. Priyadarsanan Dharma Rajan, Dr. M.K. Sajeevan, and Dr. Jayalakshmi, providing important insights and future directions.

Dr. Bijukumar congratulated the team on their dedicated efforts and distributed certificates to the volunteers in recognition of their commitment and contribution.

VFC 2026 successfully documented a total of 73 species, including 63 finfish species and 10 crustacean species, reflecting the fish biodiversity of the ecosystem.

The survey was conducted across 15 selected sites in the southern part of Vembanad, including market and landing centre records, providing valuable insights into the region’s aquatic diversity. Participants were divided into three groups — Eastern Cruise, Western Cruise, and Riverine — to ensure effective field observations and data collection.

VFC also recorded an impressive total of 43 bird species, highlighting the rich avian diversity of the Vembanad ecosystem. The observations further emphasize the ecological significance of the region and the importance of biodiversity documentation and conservation efforts.

Together, the initiative highlighted teamwork, scientific exploration, and the importance of conserving our aquatic ecosystems.
