HARIDWAR: After Agra, Bareilly, Varanasi, Badaun and Jhansi, inmates of Haridwar jail have now proceeded on a hunger protest in favour of their demand for the release of life convicts who have served imprisonment for over 14 years. The issue has taken the jail as well as state authorities by surprise and they fear the strike might spread to other district jails of the hill state.
Undeterred by threat of action by the jail administration, prisoners in Haridwar district jail at Roshanabad continued their hunger strike for the second day on Tuesday. Jail superintendent Satish Kumar Sukhija told TOI, "On Sunday, some 20 prisoners refused to take dinner but were persuaded later not to do so. On Monday, as many as 90 of the total 1,021 prisoners, including 50 who have served 14 years' term, went on hunger strike."
Efforts were made by the administration on Monday to get the strike called off, but in vain. This led to a notice being served to the prisoners on strike. According to the rules, they can also be made to serve an extra year of imprisonment for going on hunger strike, the notice said.
