The primary intention of combining the terms furniture and design together is to articu-
late an emerging discipline in the combined synthesis of the two terms. The phrase
furniture design establishes a framework for an emerging discipline that is comparable to
interior design, industrial design, fashion design, or graphic design—a discipline that
is co-dependent with other allied design fi elds and, yet, one that has a core body of
knowledge. It is an area of study that extends beyond the summation of furniture and Design .

Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interior of a building to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the people using the space. An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such enhancement projects. Interior design is a multifaceted profession that includes conceptual development, space planning, site inspections, programming, research, communicating with the stakeholders of a project, construction management, and ex*****on of the design.
