CIDR - Center for Interdisciplinary Data Science Research

--> A bit about the program:
In recent years, significant progress was made in the field of data science, both in industry and academia.
However, not all organizations benefit from this progress equally.
While many non-profit and government organizations collect data that can be used to make a positive social impact, often these organizations lack the resources, both budgetary and professional, to make use of it🫤
In academia, graduate students from various computational fields such as Statistics and Computer Science strive for opportunities to work on real-world problems that matter🙏🏼
DSSG is a practical training program where students work closely with government institutions and nonprofit organizations on projects that arise from real needs.
This allows us to simultaneously promote the use of data science for positive social impact, and to Advance data science education🤩
The heart of the programs is an extensive 4 week summer workshop during which our teams work together on their projects on a full time basis from CIDR’s space.
At the end of the workshop we provide our partners with a solution or a proof of concept answering their needs, and the means to reproduce the research we performed.

Science says - do not fail to fail!☝️
Prof. Dashun Wang and his colleagues at Northwestern University used big data to understand what separates winners from losers and found that failure is “the essential prerequisite for success”. The group has published a paper that, among other things, is based on an analysis of 776,721 grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health from 1985 to 2015.
The takeaway?⬇️
“Every winner begins as a loser”.
Keep up your work, you're off to great places!💚

All done with your research work? that's awesome!
Here are 7 tips to get your paper noticed by the relevant people, to take your findings to the next stage:🔊
1. Email people you have referenced in your paper, and other key colleagues in your field, with a link to your paper
2. Update your profile on professional and academic networking sites (such as LinkedIn, ResearchGate and Mendeley) with a link to your published article (do not post the actual published article)
3. Update your institutional/departmental homepage and research group website with a link to your paper
4. Contact your institution’s press office with a summary of your paper and ask for advice about promoting it to the media
5. Write a lay summary of your paper (with a link to the full version) and send to blogs in your subject area
6. Produce a video abstract giving an accessible introduction to your article (this can help to encourage people to read your paper)
7. Mention your publication at conferences when giving presentations, and have copies to hand out to colleagues
Last but not least, please let us at CIDR know about your work and we'll make sure to contact you with the right people/organizations.
