Over the last few weeks Glen has been out on location shooting feature stories for a TV talent show that airs in early 2021. We were asked to push the boundaries by filming with iPhones and we were more than happy to oblige. The kit used included:

iPone 11ProMax, iPhoneX and iPhone 7+
Mics included Rode Wireless Go, Deity V-Lav, Shure MV88+, Sennheiser MKE400, Zoom F1 and MikMe Pocket. We had a Zhiyun Smooth4 Gimbal, SmallRigs Pro cage for iPhone, Helium Core, Rhino ROV Pocket Slider and lights from Godox, LumeCube and others. We’ll publish a few “directors cuts” of the pieces once they have aired. As always we shot with Filmic Pro App, pre-cut in LumaFusion in the field and used the export to FinalCut Pro via XML feature to move the edits to a Macbook Pro for finishing. The main reasons for using FCPx were image stabilisation and audio plugins like noise reduction and auto-levelling.

The training course in Aljazeera is 5 days long and focuses on the multiple uses of mobile for content creation; photos, audio recording and editing, multimedia slideshows, shooting video sequences, editing, titling and overlays. At the end of the course, after a 1 day shoot on location each team must produce a finished report for online. We partner with the Thomson Foundation for these overseas courses.

Glen is just back from Vienna where he spoke at RadioDays Europe conference. His 45 minute solo presentation was an overview of the evolution of mobile journalism to date and a look at the next phase of disruption which lies ahead. Over 150 delegates attended the session.
