Addiction affects more than the individualโ€”it impacts partners, children, parents, friends, and the wider family. The journey through addiction can often feel overwhelming, confusing, and isolating. However, recovery is possible, and families can heal alongside their loved one.

The seven stages shown in this guide illustrate a common pathway that many families experience. While everyone's journey is unique, these stages help explain how understanding, support, and healthy boundaries can transform fear and uncertainty into hope and resilience.

Stage 1 โ€“ Unaware

The early signs of addiction may be misunderstood or dismissed. Families often sense that something has changed but may not yet recognise addiction as the underlying cause.

Stage 2 โ€“ Coping Alone

Many people try to manage the situation in silence. Feelings of shame, guilt, worry, or fear can prevent families from reaching out for support, leaving them feeling isolated and emotionally exhausted.

Stage 3 โ€“ Desperately Seeking

As the impact of addiction grows, families begin searching for answers. This is often the turning point where people seek advice, education, or professional support.

Stage 4 โ€“ Supported Learning

Learning about addiction helps families understand that recovery involves everyone. Developing healthy boundaries, improving communication, and focusing on personal wellbeing are essential steps towards lasting change.

Stage 5 โ€“ Reclaiming the Family

Recovery is about more than stopping harmful behaviours. Families begin rebuilding trust, restoring relationships, and creating a healthier, more stable home environment where everyone can thrive.

Stage 6 โ€“ Supporting Recovery

Families learn to support recovery without rescuing or enabling. Encouragement, consistency, compassion, and self-care become the foundations of long-term healing.

Stage 7 โ€“ Contributing

Many people discover strength and purpose through their experiences. By sharing their story, supporting others, or becoming advocates for recovery, they help reduce stigma and inspire hope in those beginning their own journey.

Key Messages to Remember:

Recovery is a journey, not a destination.
Healing takes time, patience, and support.
Looking after your own wellbeing is not selfishโ€”it is essential.
Healthy boundaries strengthen relationships and promote lasting recovery.

No one has to face addiction alone. Help and hope are available.

Remember: Every small step forward matters. With understanding, support, and the right tools, families can move from surviving to thriving together.

Following our recent post announcing the approval of core funding for the coordination of the FASN project across the North East, we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge and thank some of the individuals whose support and commitment have helped make this milestone possible.

The funding was approved by ๐—™๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—•๐˜†๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฒ, ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ป ๐—›๐—ฆ๐—˜ ๐—”๐—ฑ๐—ฑ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ ๐—Ÿ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ต/๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ต ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—›๐—ฆ๐—˜ ๐——๐˜‚๐—ฏ๐—น๐—ถ๐—ป & ๐—ก๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต ๐—˜๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—ด๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—›๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—”๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ, and represents an important investment in strengthening support for families affected by substance use.
