Did you know: In Italy, takes on a charmingly different name: Pesce d’Aprile, or “April Fish.” Celebrated on April 1st just like elsewhere, the day is filled with playful pranks and lighthearted jokes, but with a uniquely Italian twist. Instead of just tricks, a classic tradition involves secretly taping a small paper fish onto someone’s back—if they don’t notice, they become the “April fish” of the day. The origins of the fish symbol aren’t entirely clear, but it’s often linked to the idea of gullibility, like a fish easily caught on a hook. The result is a fun, slightly mischievous celebration that blends humor with a touch of cultural flair.
I remember back in school our Latin teacher was Sardinian, in Italian ‘Sarda’, word that has the double meaning of ‘from Sardinia’ and ‘Sardine’ the fish…so we drew a massive banner that read “long live the sardine of April”, “W La Sarda d’Aprile”…I think that’s the cleverest prank I have ever made 😂🐟
