On this day in 1875, a remarkable journey began. Ten courageous and strong spirited Loreto women set sail from Loreto Abbey Rathfarnham, bound for an unknown future in Australia.

Mother Gonzaga Barry was accompanied by nine companions, Sisters Aloysius Macken, Berchmans Stafford, Boniface Volcher, Bruno McCabe, Dorothea Frizelle, Gertrude Quinn and Xavier Yourelle and two future postulants, Helen Hughes and Margaret O’Brien.

Their 17,000-kilometre journey from Ireland to Australia was in response to the invitation of Bishop Michael O’Connor, who encouraged them to meet the educational needs of the growing Catholic population in Australia.

The ten pioneering Loreto Sisters spent nearly two months at sea aboard the SS Somersetshire – guided by courage, faith, and a shared mission. They arrived at Port Melbourne on 19 July 1875, a date we now celebrate each year as Loreto Heritage Day.

Mother Gonzaga Barry's original travel diaries are preserved in the Institute Archives in Dublin. You can read the digitised and enhanced versions here: https://heyzine.com/flip-book/bd06b533c9.htm
