Happy solstice

17/12/2025

Dear colleagues,
We have some dreadfully sad news. Dr Eoin Grogan, an archaeologist well-known to many of us, passed away peacefully this last Tuesday night

Eoin was one of the most pre-eminent archaeological scholars of his generation. He completed a BA in Archaeology in UCD (1977), an MA (1979) and a PhD on early prehistory in north Munster (19889). He worked as a tutor and lecturer in UCD, led the Wicklow Archaeological Survey, published by NMS, and was one of the first Project Directors in the Discovery Programme, leading the North Munster Project from 1991. He also became programme director of Irish Cultural Heritage at Maynooth University with Dr Mary Leenane. He was a leading expert on the Irish Bronze Age, a mentor to many of us lucky enough to work with him, and an adept and warm teacher in his university at Maynooth. He was also a generous supporter of younger archaeologists in the field, always available to offer advice and encouragement. There will be much more to be said about his career and his huge contribution to Irish archaeology and the European Bronze Age.

Eoin was a kind, gentle and generous person, he will be much missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with his loved ones, his beloved wife Helen, and his two sons Connor and Niall, and all his family and friends.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

It was another busy media morning for us on site as we did two further interviews with Live 95 and with Limerick City and County Council. Pictured is ACSU Supervisor Kat Thomson giving an interview, with Ian Russell (off camera), to LCCC about our excavations
