For when the kids are finally in bed…

You’re ready to switch off but your body doesn’t know how. You definitely feel tired. It doesn’t stop your mind from running through everything that happened in the day and everything you need to deal with tomorrow. You feel the tension in your body. A restlessness that won’t settle.

What your body needs is a signal that it’s safe to relax. It’s time to rest. Everything you need to deal with tomorrow can wait for tomorrow.

Aromatherapy provides that signal. Essential oil aromas have a powerful effect on the stress response that keeps our bodies tense and minds busy. They help us switch from the sympathetic (fight or flight) to the parasympathetic nervous system (rest & digest).

All you need is to inhale the aromas and let them release calm into your system. You can enjoy essential oils in many different forms, hand cream, body oil or, my favourite after a long day, skincare.

🪻 My skincare is my off-switch. Discover your off-switch by exploring our aromatherapy skincare, bodycare and rollerballs on the Esker Fields website.

I’m sure a lot has already happened this week and you still have a lot to do but let’s take stock.

Place your hand on your chest or stomach to feel the rhythm of your breath. Let that be the centre of your attention for a moment.

Find an essential oil blend or a scent you enjoy and breathe it in for 1, 2, 3 breaths. Notice where you feel tense, send loving energy to those parts of your body and let it dissipate.

We’re taking a moment for you. Don’t let it be the only moment you take for yourself this week. Think of one thing you can do that will refill your cup.

Keep it quick and simple as you’re more likely to follow through with it. How about going for a peaceful walk? No headphones. Just enjoy being outside. Notice the sights and sounds you usually rush past.

When could you manage to go for a walk, even if it’s just for 10 minutes? Make a note of it in your calendar because taking care of your own wellbeing is just as important as anything else on your to-do list.

🌿 is here to be the pause, the deep breath and the stillness in your day.

Whatever is going on in life right now can wait as you take a moment to breathe. Feel the breath move through your body, your stomach, your chest, your throat.

If you have a blend to hand, bring out essential oils and take three deep breaths of the aromas. Feel your shoulders lower, your jaw release and your whole body relax.

Now as you are enjoying this moment for you, think about the one thing you can do this week to care for your own wellbeing. You are so good at taking care of everyone else. Let’s plan something for you.

It could be quick and simple. How about standing in the garden with bare feet? The feeling of your feet touching the grass is so grounding. It brings us back down to earth.

When would be a good time for you to do this? When you’re having your morning tea? When you’ve just got back home from work? When you take the dog out?

Make it work for you and let that be your one commitment to yourself this week.

🪻 If you struggle with meditation, try this…

I am such an advocate for self-care as someone who has dealt with stress and burnout in the past. It’s through this lived experience that I know looking after yourself isn’t always easy.

Stepping away from a hectic day to clear your mind through meditation can leave you overthinking even more than you were before. There have been times I’ve sat down to listen to a guided meditation and heard nothing because I got distracted by worried thoughts.

That being said, the practice of pausing, slowing down and just being is something I want to have as part of my regular life. So I combine meditation with aromatherapy to help me reach the state of relaxation I’m looking for.

Both meditation and aromatherapy are effective wellbeing techniques. Together, they ease and deepen relaxation. The essential oils slow the breath while the meditation slows the mind.

I explain how to use aromatherapy as part of meditation in the new blog on the Esker Fields website. It includes a link to a free guided meditation I’ve created which incorporates aromatherapy, specifically the Esker Fields Relax Rollerball.
