Breakthrough Cancer Research
Radiotherapy is an important treatment for many people with cancer. However, ensuring the right dose is delivered precisely to the tumour while protecting nearby healthy tissue remains an ongoing challenge.
Dr. Sinéad O’Keeffe, Research Fellow at the University of Limerick, is leading ORIGIN, a European research project developing new optical fibre sensor technology to monitor radiation treatment in real time.
These tiny sensors are designed to provide clinicians with more accurate information during treatment, helping to optimise radiation delivery and improve confidence in the dose being delivered.
🎯 The goal: make radiotherapy more precise and effective for people with prostate and gynaecological cancers
🔬 By providing real-time radiation dose monitoring and source localisation, the technology could help optimise treatment and improve patient outcomes

For people living with breast and gynaecological cancers, current treatments can save lives, but they can also cause significant side effects because they do not only affect cancer cells. They can also affect healthy cells.
Dr. Neil Conlon, Assistant Professor in Biotherapeutics at Dublin City University DCU, leads the Breast and Gynaecological Cancer Research Group.
His research focuses on developing better, more precise treatment options for people living with these cancers.
By understanding breast and gynaecological cancers at a deeper biological level, Neil and his team aim to support the development of treatments that are not only more effective, but also kinder for people with cancer.
Research like this is helping bring us closer to new, better, smarter, kinder and more effective treatments that can improve outcomes and quality of life for people affected by cancer.

Today is National Cancer Survivors Day.
It's a day to honour people living with and beyond cancer, to celebrate life, and to recognise the scientific progress that has made survival possible for so many.
Here in Ireland, more than 220,700 people have faced and survived a cancer diagnosis.
Today is a moment to celebrate every survivor, while also recognising that life after cancer can bring ongoing physical, emotional, financial and practical challenges.
National Cancer Survivors Day is also a reminder of why research matters.
For all of us at Breakthrough Cancer Research it is a promise to keep pushing science forward, so that every breakthrough reaches more cancer types, more treatment options, and more people waiting for hope.
As we celebrate survivors of cancer today, we reaffirm our commitment to creating a future where cancer is a survivable disease for everyone.
Together, let’s build a future where 100% of people survive 100% of cancers.
Keep believing. Keep advocating. Keep helping to .
