Hydration

As the summer heat is upon us remember to stay hydrated throughout the day!

Avoid reaching for coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol over water as these can dehydrate you more sometimes as they are high in sugars. If you are out drinking or socialising then remember to also add in glasses of water as often as you can.

Keeping cool with light clothing, a hat and sticking to the shade as this can help you stop sweating as much which will therefore keep you at a less of a chance of getting dehydrated.

Keep sipping cool water throughout the day and watch for dry lips or skin as a sign you may be lacking in water. The body usually only registers thirst if you are already mildly dehydrated and have a body water loss of 1-2% so keep a bottle with you at all times.

Check yourself for mild headaches, feeling weak, feeling lightheaded and for yellow to dark urine colour regularly throughout the day to make sure you are sufficiently hydrated.

Adding dilute, slices of fruit, berries or more to your water can encourage you to keep drinking and keeping a glass or bottle by your side at all times can also help the habit form.

Stay sun safe

Bloating...

A very common issue for many, especially females.

Bloating comes from when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas, making the abdomen feel tight, swollen and filled with pressure. People experiencing it can feel only lightly uncomfortable or actually be in moderate pain that can affect their everyday activities.

Gas is a common cause of bloating and it can build up in the digestive tract when undigested food gets broken down or when you swallow air.

Eating and drinking too fast so you are swallowing excessive air is a common cause of bloating. Smoking, chewing gum, having IBD (irritable bowel disorders) issues, food intolerances, weight gain, mental health issues and eating disorders can all be causes of bloating also.

Changing lifestyle habits like giving up chewing gum or smoking or making an conscious decision to slow down when eating can all help issues of bloating.

However, often more serious issues can be the root of the problem so make sure to contact a healthcare professional if problems are persistent and affecting your day to day activities.
