Lipedema and cellulite are often confused — but they are not the same.

Cellulite
Cellulite is very common and affects women of all body types. It appears as dimples or uneven skin texture, usually on the thighs or buttocks. It is mainly a cosmetic concern, not a medical condition, and is not typically painful.

Lipedema
Lipedema is a chronic medical condition that mainly affects women. It involves an abnormal accumulation of fat, most often in the legs and sometimes the arms. Unlike cellulite, lipedema is often associated with:
• Pain or tenderness
• Heaviness and swelling
• Easy bruising
• Fat that does not respond to diet or exercise

Symptoms often begin or worsen during hormonal changes.

👉 Lipedema should be assessed and diagnosed by a GP or medical specialist.

While massage therapists do not diagnose lipedema, lymphatic drainage can be used as a complementary approach to help support comfort and manage swelling.
