People believed that the world was flat and ships that didnt come home had fallen off the edge of the world. They still believe that the craters were caused by meteor strikes, but its more credible that they were blow outs from the molten hot planet as it cooled down over millions of years.

If the many craters on the moon were a result of meteorites impacting, that would suggest that space is loaded with meteorites flying in all directions. The alternative logical view is that the craters are a result of bubbles that break through the crust to the surface of the molten ball of fire.
