Arklow Silver Band

Yesterday, we received the sad news of the passing of a much-loved former member, loyal supporter, dear friend, and true brass band enthusiast, Peter Clegg.
Peter was born in Milnrow, UK, and came to Ireland in the 1970s to work with Arklow Homes and Roy Dempsey. A highly skilled and dedicated craftsman, he quickly established himself as a master carpenter and joiner, earning great respect for his workmanship and professionalism. During his time in Arklow, Peter made not only a home but a life—marrying a local Arklow woman and becoming part of the fabric of the community.
Music, however, was always close to Peter’s heart. A committed bandsman, he joined Arklow Silver Band, where he played Flugel Horn and Cornet before settling into his preferred role on E♭ Bass. He brought with him not just musical ability but also a deep passion for brass banding, along with camaraderie and good humour that endeared him to all who knew him.
After returning to England, Peter continued to follow his entrepreneurial spirit, establishing a successful joinery and joined the carpentry business his father established called Leach and Clegg. Despite the distance, he never lost touch with Arklow or the band. His connection remained strong—he maintained regular contact with his many friends here, and his affection for the town was clear in his frequent visits. Indeed, Peter went so far as to purchase a small apartment in Arklow, ensuring he always had a place to return to.
A man of many talents and interests, Peter was also a qualified pilot and would occasionally fly his own plane to Ireland—an achievement that reflected both his adventurous spirit and his determination to stay connected with those he cared about.
Peter will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His friendship, loyalty, encouragement, and enduring enthusiasm for brass banding leave a lasting legacy within our band and our community.
The band extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife Jane, his children, and all his family at this very sad time.
Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
May his soul rest at the right hand of God.
