Pixel Art Tips: How to Create Your Own 3D Brushes in ASEPRITE!

1. Create a circle sprite
Start by drawing a circle on your canvas. Add lighting and shading to give it a 3D effect— for example, make the top lighter and the bottom darker.

2. Select the sprite
Use the selection tool to fully select the circle you’ve made. Make sure all its pixels are included in the selection.

3. Press Ctrl + B on your keyboard
This command will save the selected sprite as a custom brush.

4. Use the brush
You can now paint using a brush that already has built-in lighting and shading, making your shapes instantly look more volumetric.

5. Create brush variations
Repeat the process to make different versions of your brush:

Different sizes – small, medium, and large circles for flexible drawing.

Different lighting directions – light coming from the top, bottom, left, right, or diagonals.

Different shading styles – softer gradients or sharper highlights for various materials.

With custom 3D brushes, you can speed up your workflow—whether it’s building character anatomy, designing trees, or creating other complex shapes in no time.
