9 Tips for Successful Internship Abroad

1. BUILD a TRUST
During the first couple of weeks on your internship, you have to earn the trust of your supervisor and colleagues. This will be achieved by demonstrating motivation, tackling all tasks with enthusiasm, working hard and showing you are happy to work with them.

2. COMMUNICATE
Don’t be afraid to communicate to your supervisor about your work if you have a question or concerns.

3. HAVE A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Employers like to see someone who enjoys a challenge and is enthusiastic.

4. BE PATIENT
Don’t expect to be given responsibilities and projects of your own straight away. There will be some adaptation time when your supervisor will assess what you will be working on according to your strengths and motivation.

5. BE PUNCTUAL AND RESPONSIBLE
It seems obvious, but these two ingredients are not always applied. Whether you’re an intern or an employee, you are expected to arrive on time at work and let your supervisor know if you have a delay or if for some reason you can’t attend one day.

6. ASK FOR HELP
Be willing to admit what you don’t know. Your internship place knows you’re still building your experience and they won’t expect you to know everything.

7. REMEMBER THAT YOU GET OUT WHAT YOU PUT IN
If you work with a positive attitude, a willingness to put yourself forward to take on projects and enthusiasm for your work you will build positive working relationships with your co-workers, you will be trusted with more responsibility and you will be able to achieve your goals and develop the professional skills & experience you are seeking.

8. BE PROACTIVE
Contribute your own ideas in meetings with your supervisor or other colleagues.

9. BE EAGER TO LEARN
Show enthusiasm. Be open minded. You'll be able to build trust more quickly and move on to more exciting tasks when you show a level of interest and curiosity.
