It's been 12 years since Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared while flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on board. The Boeing 777 vanished without a trace in 2014, setting off an unprecedented international search that would span years and cover enormous portions of the Indian Ocean.
The latest phase of that effort concluded just this past January, when exploration company Ocean Infinity departed the search area without locating the wreckage. Since first embarking on the mission in 2018, the company says it has spent more than 150 days at sea and mapped over 140,000 square kilometers of seafloor using autonomous underwater vehicles and advanced robotic systems.
Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett said the team returned to the region determined to use every available piece of information and technology to locate the aircraft. Despite those efforts, the search yielded no breakthrough. Still, investigators say narrowing down where the aircraft is not located may help refine future search efforts as the world continues to search for answers.
