Károly Hopp-Halász began his career in the late 1960s as a member of the Pécs Workshop, a group of young artists that initially gathered around older teacher and painter Ferenc Lantos. For a long time and under Lantos’s influence, the group focused on the reinterpretation of geometric painterly traditions. Hopp-Halász’s practice combined both traditional and contemporary forms of Constructivism. Beside painting which stayed his favoured medium, photography, photo-action and performance, graphic art, object art and installation allowed him to explore recurring motifs and themes.

One of the artist’s essential endeavours was to bring natural and geometric forms closer together, and especially to highlight the correspondences between the symmetric, structural aspects of the human – principally – male body and geometry. Starting with pop-art compositions on early enamel pieces in the end of the 1960s already, Hopp-Halász explored this relation throughout his career until his last body of works juxtaposing photos of male faces, bodies or body parts and painting in a serial, installation or pictorial approach, under the title Open Geometry.
