We were recently invited to Popolare restaurant in Budapest to check out their menu and concept behind this new Italian restaurant!

One thing that really suprised us, was a Pizza with beetroot, almond, and burrata! We also tried some other creative dishes from their dinner menu!

The space feels stylish, but the idea is simple: affordable, delicious Italian food in a place where people can gather and enjoy something a bit more colorful.

Why is gulyás soup called gulyás? 🥣🇭🇺

The name goes back to the cattle herdsmen of the Great Hungarian Plain (the “gulyás”) who made simple, hearty meat dishes over open fire.

Over time, with beef, paprika, and a lot of Hungarian history, this humble herdsmen’s food became one of Hungary’s most famous dishes.

If you visit Hungary and want to try a classic local red wine, look for Bikavér, also known as “Bull’s Blood.” 🍷

It’s especially famous from the town of Eger, where legend connects the name to the defenders of Eger Castle. During a medieval siege, Hungarian soldiers drank red wine, and according to the story, the enemy believed it was bull’s blood that gave them supernatural strength.

Of course, it’s just a legend, but it became one of the most memorable stories connected to Hungarian wine.

A small note: while Eger is the best-known name internationally, Bikavér and the name itself also have a longer and important history in Szekszárd, another historic Hungarian wine region. And while the story may be fun and interesting, most likely it was invented way after the historic siege.
