Welcome to Diocletian’s Palace, located in modern-day Split, Croatia. Built at the turn of the 4th century AD, this wasn’t just a peaceful retirement villa; it was a sprawling, Roman military camp. Diocletian was so deeply paranoid about assassination and political collapse that he constructed this giant sanctuary to live out his final days in total isolation, surrounded by his elite bodyguards.

Imagine ruling the known world with an iron fist, completely restructuring the entire Roman Empire, and then doing something no other emperor had ever done: voluntarily retiring to a massive, custom-built seafront fortress.
