Time to get your head blown 🤯

As you know, when you take off in a plane, the temperature starts to drop. At the average plane cruising altitude (~10 km or 6 miles) the temperature is around -45 °C (-55 °F).

However, at around 20 km (12 miles), it starts to increase! By the time you reach the thermosphere (80 km or 50 miles), the temperature reaches around 1000 °C (1800 °F)!

What is a temperature? Temperature is just the energy due to the jiggling of particles. More precisely, temperature is the average kinetic energy of the jiggling of particles in a gas/liquid.
Therefore, particles in the thermosphere jiggle a lot, hence the high temperature.
However, you don't feel the heat if these particles don't hit your skin and transfer some of their energy. Since the thermosphere is rare, there aren't many particles to transfer this energy to you. This means that even though the temperature is around 1000 °C (1800 °F), you wouldn't really feel this.
