THE HORSE racing industry mourns the lost of the life of young apprentice jockey Kishawn Pereira. One death is too much for the industry, more so our country.

I, Fazal Habibulla, owner of Rising Sun Race Club (RSTC) facility wish to share my sincere condolences to the family of Kishawn Pereira, who died on Sunday 17th august, 2025 from his mount Blinding Light in the tenth race of the 11-race Guyana Cup race day held at RSTC.

This is a quintessential moment in the history of our sports. It is a redefining moment for the sport, and young riders whose dreams are to become jockeys. It is a nightmare for parents. I being a jockey also, and now a parent is aware of the risk involved. Our children will always pursue their desires, due to their love. We make them, and have to be mindful. We did not make their mindset. This is a difficult time for Kishawn's parent. As it is very difficult for a parent to bury a child. When it should be the reverse. I, and the horse racing fraternity will exemplify our recognition of this youngster

His memory will be inducted in the form of an Apprentice Jockey School - named in his honour. This is the discussion being held amongst the major stakeholders, who promote the sport. We will seek the permission of the family in this regard, and other ideas we have discussed to recognise his memory at the race track.

He was last year's Champion apprentice. We have lost a star in the making. I am aware that a representative of Jumbo Jet Thoroghbred Committee's (JJTC) met with his family to share our heartfelt impact of his death. This is their moment of mourning. We will not disturb this moment. We will respect it, We will do everything in the best interest of the family, to comfort them in their loss. This message was conveyed by our emissary, who reported that the family was happy that JJTC reached out to them.

It was indeed a 'dark' Sunday for the whole of Guyana, as the news of his death reached all parts of the world - not only the racing community.

We are indeed in shock, and promise to honour the memory of this young star.
