UNDRR and Civil Defence Commission Host MCR2030 Workshop.
The United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), in collaboration with the Civil Defence Commission (CDC), today commenced a two-day Making Cities Resilient 2030 (MCR2030) workshop for Georgetown at the CDC Headquarters.
The workshop, being held on May 6–7, 2026, brings together key stakeholders from government agencies, local authorities, and partner organizations to strengthen urban resilience and disaster risk reduction strategies within Guyana.
The engagement is aimed at supporting Georgetown’s alignment with the global MCR2030 initiative, which promotes risk-informed urban planning, improved disaster preparedness, and enhanced capacity to respond to natural and man-made hazards.
Participants will benefit from technical sessions, collaborative discussions, and practical exercises focused on:
Assessing urban risk and vulnerabilities.
Strengthening institutional coordination.
Advancing the use of the City Resilience Scorecard.
Identifying priority actions for building a resilient Georgetown.
Speaking at the opening, UN Resident Coordinator emphasized the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in addressing the increasing risks posed by climate change, flooding, and rapid urbanization, while the Director General of the Civil Defence Commission Col Nazrul Hussain, emphasised that the Government of Guyana, through the Civil Defence Commission, remains firmly committed to strengthening disaster risk management systems at all levels. However, resilience is not built by a single agency it requires coordinated action across sectors, institutions, and communities.
The workshop forms part of ongoing efforts by the Government of Guyana, through the Civil Defence Commission, to enhance national and local disaster risk management systems and to build safer, more resilient communities. The CDC reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with international partners such as UNDRR to support sustainable development and disaster resilience initiatives across the country.
