Local Government Commission - Guyana
09/08/2023
On the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous People, the Local Government Commission offer our congratulations and support of Indigenous people all over the World in their determined resolve to have their rights recognized and protected and "to maintain their distinct cultures and way of life".
We note this year's Theme: "Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination"; even as we reflect on the fact of Government's work among our Indigenous people, moreso the youths in the Villages, Communities with a focus on upgrade and extension of the work in the areas of Education Delivery, Health care, Agriculture, Infrastructure Extension and improvement, Sports etc. as part of Government's determined efforts to bring improved social services and physical infrastructure to our Amerindian people through the medium of the Schools, Health Facilities, Infrastructure Upgrade and Extension, Sports etc. Furthermore, these improvements would undoubtedly offer our Indigenous population wider choices in terms of the goods and services they enjoy.
The fact that many of our Amerindian population are teachers, Head teachers, Education Officers, Doctors, Medexes, Dentex, Nurses, Health workers, Agriculture Officers, Engineers, Police and Army Officers, and Ministers of Government are a result, en parte, of the Government's continuous dialogue with our Indigenous population and commitment of resources to their Villages/ Communities to address their need for more and a wider range of goods and services. Even as the Government invests in these development areas it is undoubtedly mindful of the expectation of our Amerindian Communities and its people that Government would continue to support measures to "protect the rights and maintain the distinct cultures and way of life" of the Indigenous people.
The Government's response must be, inter alia, a function of the views and wishes of our Amerindian people.
