Minister within the Ministry of Public Works, Madanlall Ramraj, along with regional representatives, recently visited Pitt Street in New Amsterdam to assess concerns raised by residents, business owners and motorists about the deteriorating condition of the roadway.

Following the assessment, works were immediately mobilized to begin resurfacing the vital thoroughfare. Pitt Street is regarded as a key commercial artery in New Amsterdam, supporting businesses, facilitating transportation and contributing significantly to economic activity in the region.

Officials say the intervention is aimed at improving road conditions, enhancing safety for motorists and pedestrians, and ensuring smoother movement within the town.

A traffic accident has been reported along Barrack Retreat Road in Lethem. Information remains limited at this time, but reports indicate at least one person may have sustained injuries. More details as they become available.

Police in Regional Division # 6 are investigating the discovery of a suspected firearm which was found on Friday June 5, 2026, during an operation conducted at Sea Dam, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice.

Acting on intelligence received, ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit went to the residence of a 29-year-old barber of Sea Dam, Crabwood Creek, where a search was conducted in his presence.

During the search, a salt bag was found under the counter of a barber shop situated in front of the residence. The bag was opened and found to contain a suspected .22 calibre rifle.

The suspect was arrested and escorted to the Springlands Police Station along with the suspected firearm which was lodged pending investigation.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue.
