Five minutes from AthensWas, the city opens into a different scale of time. The columns of the Temple of Olympian Zeus mark what was once conceived as one of antiquity’s most ambitious sanctuaries. Construction began in the 6th century BC and was only completed under Roman Emperor Hadrian, some seven centuries later. By then, the city had already shifted around it, as cities tend to do. Today, the columns remain, massive and patient. You walk among them not to arrive somewhere, but to understand how long ambition can outlast its own era.
